Shop Talk: Blossom Cafe

Shop Talk: Blossom Cafe

Did going outside feel risky in 2020?

Try starting a new business! We caught up with Michelle Buckman, owner of Blossom Cafe, to hear her story.

Hi Michelle! How long have you been in business?

Blossom Cafe opened April 22, 2021 - Earth Day!

What's the story behind your shop name?

Blossom Cafe is located inside a family-owned garden center called Floral & Hardy. It has been a long-standing local favorite with incredibly local customers. Our name is a nod to our generous partner and home.

What kind if items do you sell in your store?

Blossom Cafe proudly serves La Colombe coffee. This Philadelphia-based roaster is committed to making the world better through coffee. We are thrilled to be a part of that mission and have the privilege of serving the best tasting coffee around! We also serve farm fresh quiche, ricotta toast, harvest chicken salad, yogurt parfaits, freshly baked cookies, scones and flowerpot muffins served in terracotta pots.

Sounds delicious; we'll be right over. What is Blossom Cafe's mission in the community?

We believe that everyone deserves respect, a smile and a helping hand, whether you know their name or not. Our goal at Blossom is to provide a safe space where everyone feels wanted and welcome. Our mission is to leave a big impact on the community and a small footprint on the planet. How do we do it? All of the food on our menu is locally sourced, mostly from other small businesses in our area. Leftovers are delivered to the local food pantry weekly and a portion of our profits support other local food drives. Blossom Cafe composts all food scraps and 95% of our disposable materials are compostable or recyclable. Blossom partners with MudLOVE and Humankind Water to support clean water initiatives.

We just love partnering with you! So how has the pandemic changed your approach to running a business?

We opened in the middle of the pandemic so we have only offered outdoor seating thus far. Fortunately the weather has cooperated and it's allowed our customers to enjoy their coffee and carbs in the beautiful gardens of Floral & Hardy.

What's 1 thing everyone should know about Blossom Cafe (a fun fact, ways to support you, etc)?

The yogurt parfaits at Blossom Cafe are topped with homemade granola. This granola is extra special. During the pandemic, we were separated from my 74-year-old mom, who my daughter called Gram. Each week Gram and Zoe would meet on Zoom and bake a recipe together. They ended up baking this granola recipe every other week because we would go through our batch so quickly and never wanted to run out!  Several months before the cafe opened, Gram suddenly passed away. We are heartbroken. We have so many memories of her in the kitchen. Her love for chocolate, her baking tips and her infectious laugh lives on through us and at Blossom. Zoe and Gram's granola will always remind us that it is the little things that keep us connected.

What a beautiful reminder of someone as loved as Gram! Try a yogurt parfait the next time you're in Skippack, PA. Or follow their Instagram or Facebook or their website: blossomcafepa.com.
